Carl Peter Thunberg benannte nach ihm 1821 die Pflanzengattung Billbergia. Named in honor of Swedish âÂ?Â?KammarrättsrådâÂ?Â? [judge], botanist, and zoologist Gustaf Johann Billberg (1772-1844). "Nomen dare voluit, deditque illustr. Praefes in honorem Botanici longe Celeberrimi, Florae Svecicae elegantissimae jam Auctoris mentissimi, Domini Gust. Johan Billberg. Confiliarii Camerae Rationalis dig nissimi et Equitis de Stella polari splendidissimi."
